In the last couple of days, it has been reported that former Ambassador Richard Grenell has emerged from a brief period of silence to once again lecture the people of Kosova.

It remains unclear whether he holds any meaningful official position in the Trump Administration—or what authority, if any, he has to speak on its behalf.

What is clear from his repeated public positions is that he has chosen to advocate policies that favor Serbian interests, while attempting to influence Kosova’s internal political affairs and encouraging forces opposed to the current government.

His unfounded suggestions that he might be able to persuade the Trump Administration to secure the release of Hashim Thaçi from detention in The Hague may have hurt, rather than helped, Thaçi’s chances of being released.

Grenell also played a significant role in the political developments that led to the fall of Albin Kurti’s first government in 2020, while serving in a powerful position in the U.S. Administration.

There is also little doubt about Grenell’s hostility toward Kosova’s democratically elected leader, Prime Minister Albin Kurti. His repeated statements and interventions appear aimed at undermining Kurti’s leadership and weakening his government.

It is time for Richard Grenell to stop interfering in the internal affairs of the Republic of Kosova—one of America’s strongest and most loyal allies in Europe—particularly when such interference serves the interests of Serbia’s nationalist and increasingly authoritarian regime.

It is time for him to stop supporting policies that help Serbia to destabilize and undermine the Balkans AMERICAN INTERESTS IN EUROPE.

The people of Kosova—and only the people of Kosova—have the right to decide who their leaders should be and whom they choose to support through democratic elections.

Grenell is entitled to his personal opinions. But his opinions do not determine the political future of Kosova, nor should they be presented as the will or official policy of the United States. His views are neither appreciated nor accepted by a large majority of the people of the Republic of Kosova.

The people of Kosova can only hope that President Trump’s Administration will make clear that former Ambassador Richard Grenell does not have a free hand to interfere in Kosova’s democratic processes or speak as though his personal views represent official American policy.

It is time for this interference to stop.
